October 2019

This month #TeamPelican held our very first career open day! We had a total of 42 people walk through our doors to chat to individuals from across our business about our current career opportunities and I am so happy that people leaving ‘Pelican Towers’ had such a great experience of our business and the people that work here. A huge shout out to Amandeep, Vicki and Denise from our #Expert HR team for putting on such a fantastic event.

We were also delighted to be invited to Nailsea School careers fair to talk to parents and pupils about our career opportunities at Pelican. It was great to hear the students ask some really insightful questions and I know that our team left inspired by such a fantastic group of passionate and ambitious young people. It’s great to see such enthusiasm for sharing our opportunities and for forming partnerships with local schools, colleges and universities.

It was great to attend the Women in Business Charter meeting held at OVO Energy in Bristol this month, where we were talking about the importance of closing the gender pay gap and the benefits that come with doing so. It was fantastic to share with everyone the journey we have taken throughout Pelican over the last few years which has seen us achieve a mean gender pay gap of 2.4%. Although this is fantastic compared to the national average of 17.9%, we know there is always more work to do. The meeting was a great opportunity to not only discuss the challenges faced in closing the gender pay gap but to also work together to identify positive solutions to create a more diverse and gender equal workplace.

October at ‘Pelican Towers’ is always guaranteed to mean one thing… National Customer Service Week! Each year we celebrate all things ‘Customer Excellence’ with a week of fun events and activities as well as recognising some of our customer service heroes across the business. I was overwhelmed by the amount of effort our team put in to make #NCSW19 a success and I know they are already looking forward to what next year’s event has in store.

In community news, I am pleased to share that the team raised a massive £630.19 for our quarter three charity, Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue! Our final quarterly charity of 2019 will be The NICU Foundation, a charity that I created following the premature birth of my son Harrison and I was thrilled that our People’s Council voted for it to be our official quarter four charity.

The charity has grown in strength and size over the last 12 months following our partnership with The South West Neonatal Network and the creation of our very first animation, which was not only played in NICUs all across the country, but also recently picked up an innovation at the Clinical Excellence Awards.

Finally, this month a big thank you to Simeon and Oliver from The Mortgage Heroes who took the time to visit ‘Pelican Towers’ and provide free mortgage advice to our team. This was a very fitting way to finish our ‘Financial Fitness’ focus and I know that the team excited to put into action what they had learnt.
