December 2019

December is always a popular month at #TeamPelican as we focus on all things community, health and wellbeing and CHRISTMAS!

I would like to start with some community news and this month Debbie, Vicki and Coral from our People team used their community day to volunteer with Help Bristol’s Homeless. The team spent the morning planting flower beds and planters outside resident’s ‘micro-flats’, where temporary accommodation has been provided for homeless people to help them get back on their feet and transition back into society. After a soup break for lunch with the residents, hearing their very humbling stories, they spent the afternoon clearing out a container.

Initially the team couldn’t get through the door or see the floor! After a couple of hours, they cleared the entire container and sorted it into sections of Christmas presents, sleeping bags, back packs, pillows and blankets. They finished with a good sweep of ‘The Village’ to leave it spick and span for new residents arriving later that night. I’m very proud of our teams who are always looking for new opportunities to get out and about within our local community!

In more community news and some of the team, featuring (a cardboard) Tom Hardy, took part in the “Every Child Needs Christmas’ event this month. The fantastic campaign helps provide gifts to children in the community who may not otherwise receive a gift at Christmas. It was fantastic to see so many donations and volunteers.

You can’t celebrate Christmas without Christmas Jumper Day! We are proud to take part in Christmas Jumper Day every year to raise much needed funds for Save the Children.

The team didn’t need much convincing to dig out their festive knitwear and managed to raise an impressive £258.44! They also organised several festive walks throughout the day which was the perfect opportunity to show off their colour co-ordination (or lack thereof!) to the people of Nailsea 🙂

In health and wellbeing news, we ran our first ever quiz night this month. It was a fantastic turnout of eight teams and the evening was hosted by our very own quizmasters Joe and Jack.

We also ran a series of High Intensity Interval Training (HITT) sessions. Organised and ran by some of our very own fitness experts, these sessions were a great opportunity to get active while supporting the team’s mental health during, what can be, a stressful time of year.

Finally, we ended the year with our annual Christmas Extravaganza on Christmas Eve. With every team member enjoying lunch and officially our biggest raffle ever with over 130 prizes including iPads, a Dyson vacuum and Apple Airpods! It was a fantastic chance to celebrate another fantastic year at #TeamPelican!

This is my final blog of 2019 and I look forward to another exciting and eventful year at Pelican Towers!

I wish you all a very Happy New Year 🙂
