We care about our people, our customers and our community
At Pelican we take our social responsibilities seriously and are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce ensuring that every member of our team feels safe, happy and accepted at all times.
We have a system of values that recognise engagement, expertise, helpfulness and trust and we apply these values to everything we do. Across all areas of our business you will find amazing people doing amazing things to support our local community, benefit our environment and sponsor our mission of a being a truly diverse and inclusive place to work.
The vision for Pelican is simple: to stand out from the crowd by operating in an ethical and responsible way.
As a progressive employer it’s essential for Pelican to have diverse and engaged people, which is why our People Plan is at the heart of our business strategy.
We believe that investing in the development of a broad range of skills, experiences and backgrounds not only gives us a competitive edge, but it also puts us in the best position of meeting the needs of our business and our clients.
We have our very own LGBTQ+ network who are committed to ensuring we have a strong attendance at Bristol Pride. The team love getting involved and proudly marching not just to celebrate progress being made within the LGBTQ+ community but in remembrance and support of those still facing violence and prejudice.
Managing a job alongside home and family responsibilities creates numerous challenges. At Pelican we understand these issues, and through our ‘Working Parents Network’ we offer our people access to practical resources, thought provoking discussion, motivation and peer support. We are proud to offer a flexible working policy to help support our team in achieving a perfect work life balance. With so many of our team already taking advance of flexible working, we are always looking for new initiatives to further develop our suite of family friendly policies.
We are extremely proud of our recent gender pay gap report which details just how effective our commitment to inclusivity has been.
Pelican Business Services is committed to reducing the impact we have on our environment.
We have discarded all plastic cups and instead provide a re-usable water bottle for every member of our team. We provide cardboard, plastic, metal and paper recycling bins around each floor of our offices. To name but a few positives, recycling conserves natural resources, protects ecosystem and wildlife, saves energy and reduces landfill waste. We are making sure recycling is a daily priority for us.
Within the last year, our teams have been working incredibly hard to change over to paperless processes and have succeeded in doing so!
One of our ways to reduce paper has been to support our clients in enhancing their online services making it easier for customers to access their bills online and even save a tree of two in the process.
Our internal car share portal has recently been launched, allowing each member of our team the opportunity to car share to and from work, reducing fuel costs and lowering carbon emissions.
“It’s like Blackpool illuminations in here” Who remembers their parents saying this?! Well it must have stuck as all our offices have lighting sensors, making sure that they only come on when a person walks in! This ensures that we are being as efficient as possible and operating in a responsible and sustainable way.
We are always looking for new ways to reduce our carbon footprint and a recent restructure of the way our meter reading team operate has seen a saving of 76,800 miles, equivalent to roughly 31 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
At Pelican, we work tirelessly to provide additional support to community we serve. Our people are passionate about raising money for amazing causes across Bristol and the wider area and are not afraid to pull their socks up and get stuck in to do so!
We are extremely proud of our Community Involvement Scheme, giving every member of our team one day each year to go out into the community and make a difference. Since launching our programme we have seen so many teams across our business get together to volunteer their time from cleaning and ‘cat cuddling’ at a local animal sanctuary to planting trees with the MS Therapy Centre South West.
When it comes to fund raising, #TeamPelican are not shy! With over 25 charity days every single year, you will quite often see the team walking around town in various fancy dress outfits or even the occasional friendly competition! We are proud to have raised thousands of pounds for numerous charities but we only see this as a challenge to raise even more this year!
We have a great relationship with our local foodbanks who work relentlessly to provide local families with much needed aid all year round. With year-round collections and an extra special push for donations around the festive period, ‘Team Pelican’ are always on the lookout for new way to support the community we serve.
Our people are our most important asset and we never lose sight of that. At Pelican, we are proud of the many people initiatives we have introduced that have seen us drive employee engagement to a level where we achieved 20th place in the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for in 2018.
Our people are an integral part of the design and implementation of our initiatives and in the last two years alone those have included an award winning suite of training solutions available to all team members, a unique on-line learning portal, a first class mentoring programme and coaching framework. We are also proud to provide a range of management development solutions including one that is specifically for aspiring leaders who are looking at potentially putting their ‘toe in the water’ to see if management is for them.
In addition to developing and supporting everyone with their career aspirations, we also pride ourselves on our commitment to health and wellbeing. We have a health and wellbeing committee supported by champions from every team across our business who fully embrace and drive forward our commitments. Our annual charter is packed full of exciting monthly themed health and well-being initiatives from ‘Festive Fun’ to ‘Alfresco August’. We love cake and ice-cream at Pelican but burn off those calories with our yoga, walking and running groups!
We are also proud that all of our managers are trained in mental health awareness and we have qualified mental health first aiders on-site.
Our People’s Council, made up of representatives from across the business, meet quarterly to keep us in check and make sure we on track with all of our initiatives.
We provide the right environment for personal development and job satisfaction, and engage team members in all major decisions affecting the company to deliver for our customers.
Your exciting on-boarding journey starts from the minute you walk through our front door and meet your new team. Everything we’ve created has been shaped with you in mind.
